Do You Honour God Before Asking for His Help?
When was the last time you prayed without immediately asking God for something? Think about your recent prayers. Were they mostly about your needs, problems, expectations, and the things you wanted God to do for you?
There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs before God. Jesus Himself encourages us to ask, seek, and knock. However, when He taught His disciples how to pray, He began with something important: honouring God.
In Matthew 6:9, Jesus introduces what we commonly call the Lord’s Prayer. He begins by addressing God as “Our Father in heaven” and then declares, “May your holy name be honored.”
The Greek word ἁγιασθήτω (hagiasthētō) means “let it be regarded as holy,” “let it be honoured,” or “let it be treated with reverence.” It comes from a word associated with holiness and being set apart.
Jesus teaches us that prayer should begin with an awareness of who God is. Before we become occupied with what we want from Him, we should recognise His holiness, greatness, goodness, and authority.
Think about your relationship with someone you genuinely love and respect. Would you only speak to that person when you needed money, assistance, or a favour? A healthy relationship involves appreciation, communication, respect, and genuine concern.
Our relationship with God should reflect an even deeper sense of love and reverence.
Sometimes, our prayers become so focused on personal needs that we forget to worship. We ask for financial provision, academic success, career advancement, healing, protection, and open doors. Yet we may spend little time thanking God for His faithfulness or acknowledging His goodness.
Jesus reminds us that God deserves our honour regardless of what we are currently expecting Him to do.
But honouring God’s name goes beyond the words we speak during prayer. It should also influence how we live.
As a student, you honour God when you pursue your education with honesty and discipline. As an employee, you honour Him when you work faithfully and treat others fairly. As a parent, you honour Him through the love and example you show your family. As a Christian leader, you honour Him when your private conduct agrees with the message you preach publicly.
Even in your relationships, the way you speak, respond to conflict, keep promises, and treat people can either reflect or contradict the reverence you claim to have for God.
It is possible to say beautiful things about God in prayer while making choices that dishonour Him in everyday life.
That is why Jesus’ teaching invites us to examine both our prayers and our conduct.
Honouring God does not mean pretending that our problems are unimportant. Our heavenly Father cares about our needs. But when we begin with worship and reverence, we learn to approach our concerns with a greater awareness of the One who hears us.
Before you ask God to change your circumstances, allow your relationship with Him to shape your heart.
Remember, God’s name deserves honour in your prayers, your decisions, your relationships, and everything you do.
