Have you ever wondered why you need to pray when God already knows everything about you? If He knows your struggles, understands your needs, and sees what you are going through, why should you still ask Him for anything?

This is an important question that Jesus helps us understand in Matthew 6:8.

The Greek word οἶδεν (oiden) means “knows,” “understands,” or “is aware.” Jesus uses this word to remind us that our heavenly Father already knows what we need before we bring our requests to Him.

Think about that for a moment. Before you explain your financial difficulties, God already knows. Before you express your fears about the future, He understands. Before you share your concerns about your family, education, career, relationships, or ministry, He is already aware of what you are facing.

So, why should you pray?

Prayer is more than presenting a list of needs to God. It is an opportunity to communicate with Him, express our dependence on Him, seek His wisdom, and deepen our relationship with Him.

Consider a child who knows that a loving father is already aware of a problem. The child still approaches the father because there is comfort in sharing the burden and receiving guidance. In a similar way, prayer allows us to bring our concerns before a Father who knows and cares.

Sometimes, life becomes so difficult that we struggle to find the right words. You may be uncertain about a career decision, worried about paying your fees, concerned about your marriage, or discouraged by a situation that seems beyond your control.

At such moments, remember that prayer does not require you to explain everything perfectly. God understands what you cannot fully express.

However, knowing that God is aware of our needs does not mean we should become passive. Prayer should also lead us to act responsibly. If you are praying for academic success, study diligently. If you are praying for financial stability, manage your resources wisely. If you are praying for reconciliation, be willing to take steps towards peace.

Prayer helps us seek God’s direction as we carry out our responsibilities and trust Him with what remains beyond our control.

There will be times when God’s answers do not come in the way or at the time we expect. Even then, we can continue to approach Him with confidence, knowing that our heavenly Father understands our situation.

You do not need to impress God with many words or convince Him that your problems are serious. He already knows.

Come to Him sincerely, speak to Him honestly, and trust Him faithfully.
